Trong lĩnh vực nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam, hiếm có nghệ sĩ nào cống hiến gần như toàn bộ sự nghiệp sáng tạo của mình cho cùng một hình tượng nghệ thuật. Đối với họa sĩ Li Zhiyong, hình ảnh này chính là “con ngựa”. Trong 45 năm qua, ông không ngừng tìm tòi, đào sâu và thăng hoa chủ đề này, hình thành nên bản sắc nghệ thuật riêng biệt và độc đáo trong hội họa đương đại.

Họa sĩ Jimmy Lai chia sẻ, tình yêu với ngựa của anh bắt nguồn từ thuở còn thơ ấu, từ truyền thuyết dân gian “thánh ngựa bay lên trời” do bà ngoại tôi kể. Kể từ đó, kinh nghiệm phục vụ trong quân đội xe tăng của tôi - xe tăng thường được gọi là "ngựa chiến" - đã tạo nên mối liên hệ sâu sắc với hình ảnh này. Trong 45 năm, tôi đã cống hiến gần như toàn bộ tâm sức cho việc vẽ ngựa.

Những con ngựa do Lai Chi-yong vẽ không theo khuôn mẫu đã có của tranh dân gian truyền thống. Anh ấy đưa những chú ngựa vào bối cảnh nghệ thuật đương đại bằng những nét vẽ mạnh mẽ, cách xử lý chi tiết ngắn gọn và hạn chế cũng như ngôn ngữ đường nét nhịp nhàng. Một số con ngựa có cơ bắp và xương chắc khỏe và sẵn sàng hoạt động; một số táo bạo và tự do, nhảy lên không trung; một số đang hý trong gió với động lượng hùng vĩ; còn có người thì cúi đầu im lặng, tích lũy sức lực cho bước nhảy tiếp theo.

Họa sĩ Lại Chí Dũng cho biết, tôi chịu ảnh hưởng sâu sắc của họa sĩ nổi tiếng Nguyễn Sĩ Yim. Ruan Siyan nổi tiếng với các tác phẩm như loạt phim "Mười hai cung hoàng đạo" và "Thánh mặt". Từ học sinh cuối cấp này, tôi đã học được cách kết hợp tinh thần dân tộc và thẩm mỹ hiện đại trong nghệ thuật tạo hình.
